Sea Storm Project for Fantasy Island

Fantasy Island is a family amusement park in Ingoldmells on the East Coast of England close to Skegness and a stone’s throw from the beach, Fantasy Island is the ultimate destination for all the family.

About Fantasy Island

Its extreme rides and coasters will test thrill seekers’ nerves, while those looking for something more family-friendly will have plenty of rides, arcades, and other attractions to choose from. There are lots for the little ones to enjoy too, including rides, a soft play area and live character shows during the high season.

Opened in 1995, it sits in a busy spread of holiday parks. The Mellors Group acquired Fantasy Island in 2016 following the 2014 administration.

Sea Storm ride

A family favourite the Sea Storm ride is a carousel where the individual boats spin. It seats 40 rides in 20 boat shaped cars. It’s marketed as the perfect high-capacity carousel for a small footprint. Fantasy Island acquired the Mack Rides manufactured used ride in 2017 from Germany.  However, from the off there were reliability issues because of legacy electrics.

A new control system

Amusement Technical was commissioned to deliver a major control system upgrade.

This consisted of:
  • DC to AC conversion on the main rotation.
  • Replacement of all of motor gear boxes on arms with contemporary version.
  • Brand new control with automatic programmes consisting of SICK safety control and two schneider PLCs – one on centre and one on peripheral of ride communicating via a wireless link.
  • Each of the 20 arms has its own invertor drive making for a more comfortable and smoother ride and greater reliability with the gear boxes.
  • There are two sensors on each arm to detect position of boats.

“On the operator console we’ve installed a 7-inch touch screen HMI with various operator functions such as the ability to inhibit individual cars to take out of the ride cycle – for instance if someone has vomited in car, “explains Sean Brian, Director, Amusement Technical.

The system comes with full Amusement Technical remote monitoring via its dedicated cloud server.

The solution was delivered in March 2021. Already attraction visitors are benefiting from greater ride uptime and a safer and better ride experience.
